September - Historical Returns

Historically, September has been the single worst-performing month for the S&P 500 Index _(SPX), the Dow Jones Industrial Average _(.DJIA), and the Nasdaq Composite _(NASD)  The Stock Trader’s Almanac says, “September is when leaves and stocks tend to fall; on Wall Street, it’s the worst month of all.” Since 1958, September is the only month in which the S&P 500 shows a negative median return. _{(Source: Stock Trader’s Almanac).}

At Strong Tower, we follow a Relative Strength strategy. We can lean toward carrying a heavier cash allocation than normal heading into the 3rd quarter.

As of this writing, the S&P500 posted a monthly return, in August, of 2.72% and a quarterly S&P500 return of 2.66%. _{(Source: Raymond James & Associates).}

This is also an opportune time to evaluate our positions and “weed” the garden of any underperforming holdings. This allows us to raise our cash allocation in anticipation of lower market prices, in which to deploy funds into the market.

Stock Market

August finished strong. Despite recent volatility, the S&P 500 gained about 2.7% in August, while the Nasdaq-100 gained roughly 4.2%, its strongest August performance since 2021. Energy was one of the month’s strongest sectors. _(Nasdaq.com)

September has started under pressure. Today the S&P 500 is down roughly 0.7%, the Dow about 0.9%, and the Nasdaq about 1%, with higher oil prices and Treasury yields weighing particularly heavily on growth and technology stocks. _(APNews)

Bond yields are becoming a major issue again. The 10-year Treasury yield has climbed to approximately 4.79%, near its highest level since early 2025. Higher yields are increasing borrowing costs and putting pressure on equity valuations. _(APNews)

Inflation concerns have returned. Last week’s inflation report came in slightly hotter than economists expected, while rising energy prices are creating another potential inflationary headwind. _{(WashingtonPost)}

Fed expectations have shifted more hawkish. Markets are increasingly considering the possibility of another Fed rate increase rather than expecting easier monetary policy. _(APNews)

Oil is a key market driver. Brent crude has moved toward $94/barrel as fighting involving Iran threatens shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. _(APNews)

Geopolitics

Iran/Hormuz is the biggest immediate market risk. Renewed U.S.-Iran hostilities have disrupted shipping, and two oil tankers were reportedly struck Monday night. The Strait of Hormuz remains the critical geopolitical pressure point because of its importance to global energy supplies. _(CBSNews)

Russia is moving closer to Iran. Vladimir Putin publicly pledged support for Iran this week while meeting Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Moscow, Tehran, and Beijing are increasingly pushing back collectively against U.S. sanctions and Western economic pressure. _{(WashingtonPost)}

China continues supporting economic ties with Iran. Beijing has rejected U.S. secondary-sanctions pressure and indicated it will protect Chinese commercial interests involving Iran. _(Lemonde.fr)

Russia-Ukraine remains active. Ukraine has continued striking Russian energy and logistics infrastructure while diplomatic pressure for negotiations continues. _{(NewsSquawk.com)}

Bottom Line for Investors:

The four things to monitor:

Oil above $90 a barrel increases inflation risk.

10-year Treasury rates that approach 4.8% can be a meaningful headwind for equities.

Federal Reserve discussions are shifting back toward considering another hike.

Iran/Hormuz escalation could further restrict oil shipments and would likely mean higher energy prices, higher inflation, higher yields, and increased volatility in the equity markets.

Investment takeaway:

August’s strong performance shows that underlying equity momentum hasn’t disappeared, but the combination of rising yields, rising oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty, makes an argument for paying much closer attention to market leadership, overall breadth and relative strength as September begins.

Higher interest rates and inflation concerns remain the biggest fundamental headwind. The 10-year Treasury has recently eased to about 4.67%, providing some relief. _{(Investopedia)}

Nvidia earnings Wednesday is the major near-term test of the AI/technology trade.

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh speaks Friday at Jackson Hole, potentially providing important guidance on rates and inflation. _(Barrons)

Despite recent weakness, 2026 remains strong: S&P 500 +11.8%, Nasdaq +11.8%, Dow +11.1%, Russell 2000 +20.7% YTD. _{(AP News)}

Geopolitics:

Iran remains the biggest geopolitical market risk, particularly because of the Strait of Hormuz and its effect on oil prices.

The U.S. has announced expanded economic sanctions against Iran, while Iran has threatened retaliation. _{(AP News)}

China is pushing back against U.S. sanctions because of its significant economic and oil relationship with Iran, potentially creating another U.S.-China friction point. _{(Washington Post)}

U.S.-Canada trade tensions are escalating, adding another potential inflation and economic-growth risk. _{(The Guardian)}

Russia/Ukraine and Israel/Gaza remain unresolved geopolitical risks, although their immediate market impact is currently secondary to Iran/oil.

Bottom Line:

The market remains attractive but selective. Meaning a Relative Strength approach would provide favorable in this environment.

The three things that matter most right now are:

Interest rates → AI/technology earnings → Iran/oil.

An encouraging sign is market breadth. Small caps have significantly outperformed the major indexes this year, suggesting money may be rotating rather than simply leaving the market.

We are entering the historically weakest month of September. This coincides with historically the weakness quarter of the year. The mid-term election cycle is upon us and that usually has an effect on the market volatility. Stay tuned!

Not Everyone Does and Should Get a Trophy

The Role of Hard Work in Life, Career, and Sports

There is a comforting idea that if we participate, make an effort, and keep showing up, eventually we will receive the reward we desire. Participation trophies can serve a legitimate purpose, particularly for children learning the value of joining a team, trying something new, and honoring a commitment. But life eventually teaches a harder lesson: participation is not achievement, effort is not excellence, and wanting something is not the same as earning it.

In life, careers, and sports, not everyone gets a trophy. Not everyone reaches the goal. And sometimes the reason is uncomfortable but simple: We did not want the goal badly enough to do the work required to pursue it.

That does not mean hard work guarantees success. It does not. But refusing to do the necessary work can dramatically reduce the chances of achieving what we say we want.

Wanting the Result Is Different from Wanting the Work

Most people want desirable outcomes. Athletes want championships. Employees want promotions. Entrepreneurs want successful businesses. Students want good grades. Families want financial security. People want to be healthy, respected, accomplished, and independent.

But wanting the outcome is easy.

The more important question is: Do you want what is required to pursue it?

An athlete may want to start every game but not want the early workouts, repetitive drills, disciplined diet, painful conditioning, critique from coaches, or hours spent improving on weaknesses.

An employee may want the promotion but not want the additional responsibility, education, preparation, difficult conversations, longer hours, or accountability that comes with becoming qualified for it.

A person may want financial independence but be unwilling to control spending, delay gratification, increase earnings, save consistently, or make difficult financial decisions over many years.

In each case, the desire for the reward is real. But desire alone produces very little.

Goals have a price

Sometimes that price is time. Sometimes it is discipline, discomfort, sacrifice, patience, humility, or repeated failure. Often it is all of them. We do not necessarily get what we want. We frequently get something closer to what our choices, habits, preparation, circumstances, and abilities produce.

Sports Make the Lesson Obvious

Sports provide one of the clearest demonstrations of this principle. Two teams can both practice hard. Both can prepare. Both can desperately want to win.

One still loses.

An athlete can spend years training for the Olympics and miss qualifying by a fraction of a second. A golfer can practice thousands of hours and never make the professional tour. A talented high-school athlete can dedicate himself to his sport and never receive the scholarship he hoped for.

Hard work matters enormously, but hard work does not assure victory.

Talent matters. Coaching matters. Genetics matter. Resources matter. Competition matters. Health matters. Timing matters. Opportunity matters. And sometimes plain luck matters.

An injury can end a season.

A superior opponent can appear at exactly the wrong time.

A referee can make a questionable call.

A ball can bounce the wrong direction.

A better player at your position may come along and beat you out.

You can do many things correctly and still lose an opportunity.

None of those things meant the work was worthless. They mean the world does not promise outcomes in exchange for effort.

The mature response is not to conclude that effort does not matter. It is to recognize the distinction between what increases the probability of success and what guarantees success.

Very little guarantees success.

Hard work simply improves the odds.

Sports teach us that we can control preparation far more than we can control results.

That is one of their greatest lessons.

Sometimes We Have to Admit We Didn’t Work Hard Enough

There is another side to this discussion that is easier to avoid.

Sometimes circumstances did not defeat us.

Sometimes we defeated ourselves.

We procrastinated. We were inconsistent. We wanted comfort more than improvement. We ignored advice. We refused to practice the things we were bad at. We made excuses.

We expected recognition before producing results. We quit when the work became monotonous.

It is tempting in those moments to blame circumstances, other people, unfair systems, bad luck, coaches, employers, teachers, competitors, or society.

Sometimes those explanations are legitimate.

Sometimes they are excuses.

Personal growth requires enough honesty to know the difference.

There is no shame in discovering that you were unwilling to pay the price for a particular goal. The goal may not have been important enough to you. Perhaps the sacrifice was greater than the reward.

Perhaps your priorities changed and as a result, so did your attitude.

But there is value in saying so honestly.

“I wanted it, but I wasn’t willing to do what it required” is very different from saying, “I deserved it because I wanted it.”

Hard Work is Necessary...But it is Not Magic

The phrase “work hard and you can accomplish anything” is inspirational, but taken literally, it is not true.

There are limits.

A baseball player can train relentlessly and still be unlikely to become an MLB starting short stop. A musician can practice diligently without becoming a world-famous performer. A business owner can make intelligent decisions and still encounter a recession, disruptive competitor, regulatory change, or unexpected crisis.

Reality places constraints on ambition.

Recognizing those constraints is not pessimism. It is maturity.

Hard work should therefore be understood for what it actually provides: Opportunity, improvement, resilience, competence, and better probabilities, not certainty.

That distinction matters.

If hard work guaranteed success, every hardworking person would be wealthy, every dedicated athlete would be a champion, and every conscientious employee would become an executive.

Clearly, that is not how the world operates.

What We Can Control

We cannot control every outcome, but we have considerable influence over “the person” who enters the competition.

We can control whether we prepare.

We can control whether we practice.

We can control whether we learn.

We can control whether we accept criticism.

We can control whether we keep our commitments.

We can control whether we improve our weaknesses.

We can control how we respond when circumstances go against us.

And perhaps most importantly, we can control whether we are honest with ourselves about the effort we actually gave.

There is an enormous difference between saying “I tried” and being able to say, “I did everything I could, within my control.”

The second statement carries THE most weight.

Losing Is Not the Same as Failing

If hard work does not guarantee success, then we also need a better definition of failure.

Losing is an outcome.

Failure can be something different.

An athlete who gives everything, prepares properly, competes honorably, and loses to a better athlete, has lost the contest. That does not necessarily make the experience a failure.

An entrepreneur who builds a business responsibly and watches it fail because circumstances change, may lose money without losing the knowledge, discipline, and judgment acquired through the experience.

An employee who develops new skills and competes for a promotion, may not get the position, but may emerge considerably more valuable than before.

The trophy is not always the point.

Sometimes the reward is becoming more capable because you pursued something difficult.

Life Does Not Owe Us the Outcome

Perhaps the most important lesson is also the simplest:

Life does not owe us the result we desire merely because we participated.

Showing up matters.

Involvement matters.

Effort matters.

Hard work matters.

But achievement requires more.

It requires preparation, discipline, persistence, ability, judgment, opportunity, and circumstances, and even when many of those things come together, success can remain uncertain.

That uncertainty is not a reason to stop trying.

It is precisely what gives achievement meaning.

A trophy has value because it represents something that was not guaranteed.

A promotion matters because it had to be earned.

A championship matters because someone could lose.

A difficult goal matters because failure was possible.

The lesson should therefore be neither “everyone deserves a trophy” nor “hard work guarantees a trophy.”

The better lesson is this:

Decide what you want. Understand what it requires. Work harder and smarter than your goal demands. Accept that some factors will always remain beyond your control. And when the outcome arrives, victory or defeat, have the courage to evaluate yourself honestly.

Sometimes you will work hard and win.

Sometimes you will work hard and lose.

Sometimes you will have to admit that you did not work hard enough.

But if you learn to distinguish between effort, entitlement, achievement, and circumstances beyond your control, you gain something more useful than a participation trophy:

You learn how to compete with life on life’s terms.

Last Thought:

We can never work hard enough, live well enough, or accomplish enough to earn God’s grace and mercy. They are gifts, freely given through Christ. Yet grace is not an excuse to stop trying; it is the reason we keep trying.

“For by grace are we saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is a gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9 King James Version

That may be the larger lesson for life, as well. We strive without believing we are entitled to the outcome. We work without believing our work makes us worthy. We persevere knowing that we will sometimes fall short.

God does not ask us to earn His grace. We cannot. He asks us to receive it, and then to live differently because we have received it.

Grace is not the trophy we receive for trying hard enough. Grace is the gift we could never earn. And perhaps one of the greatest ways we honor that gift is to keep showing up, keep striving, keep trying. Not to earn God’s love. HE has already freely given it and done all the heavy lifting…............

3 Main Themes:

1) Middle East / oil is the biggest risk. U.S.–Iran tensions remain unresolved and disruption around the Strait of Hormuz is keeping oil elevated. Higher energy prices threaten to push inflation and Treasury yields higher, which is the clearest near-term threat to stocks. _(Barron’s)

2) The U.S. economy is cooling. Inflation eased to 3.4%, reducing pressure on the Fed to raise rates immediately. At the same time, weaker consumer and employment data suggest economic growth is slowing. For now, markets view this as relatively positive because it could keep the Fed on hold. _{(Financial Times)}

3) AI is still supporting stocks, but enthusiasm is cooling. Strong AI-related earnings helped keep markets near records earlier in the week, but AI and semiconductor stocks have since pulled back as investors question valuations and the returns on massive AI spending. _{(AP News)}

Bottom Line:

The market is caught between good fundamentals/cooling inflation and rising geopolitical, oil and interest-rate risks. Stocks remain close to record highs, but the risk/reward has become less comfortable.

Things to watch: Oil/ Hormuz, Treasury yields/Fed, consumer weakness and AI earnings. These 4 factors may suggest whether this remains a normal pullback or develops into something more significant.

Oil: Brent has swung around $87 - $90/barrel, roughly 13% higher than a week ago. A Hormuz deal could push oil lower; failed negotiations could send it higher. _(Mint)

Bottom Line:

The Sound of Music!

Remember The Sound of Music? The 1965 classic musical film direct by Robert Wise, starring Julie Andrews as Maria and Christopher Plummer as Captain Georg von Trapp. It was based on the 1959 Broadway musical by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hamerstein II, which was inspired by the true story of the von Trapp family.

Maria, a spirited young nun at an Austrian abbey, in Salzburg, Austria, is sent to serve as governess to the seven children of the widowed Captain von Trapp. Through music, kindness, and encouragement, she wins over the children and eventually falls in love with the captain. As Nazi Germany annexes Austria in 1938, the family must choose between complying with the regime or fleeing their homeland.

More than 60 years after its release, The Sound of Music remains one of the most popular movie musicals ever made. It is celebrated for its memorable songs, stunning Alpine scenery, family-centered story, and themes of courage, love, and resilience.

One of the songs in the film version, “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” was performed as a duet by Charmain Carr, as Liesl von Trapp and Daniel Truhitte, as Rolf Gruber. The memorable scene takes place in the famous gazebo, where Rolf serenades Liesl while they sing and dance together in the rain.

A couple of interesting facts:

Charmian Carr was actually 21 years old when she filmed the scene, despite playing a 16-year-old Liesl.

During filming, Carr accidentally fell through one of the gazebo’s glass panes and injured her ankle, but the scene was completed after she recovered.

It’s one of the film’s most iconic musical numbers and remains a favorite from the Rodgers and Hammerstein score.

My oldest daughter turns 17 on Thursday. As I was finishing up my early morning walk today, I watched as she drove off to swim practice. I couldn’t help but think of that classic scene in The Sound of Music and the song, “Sixteen Going on Seventeen.” In what feels like the blink of an eye, the little girl who once dressed as Tinker Bell for Halloween has grown into a confident young woman, preparing for her next chapter as a student-athlete at the University of South Carolina.

Moments like these are a gentle reminder of how quickly time passes. Life has a way of moving us from one season to the next before we realize it. While we celebrate the milestones ahead, it’s also important to treasure the ordinary moments: a wave, a smile, a morning goodbye, that often become our most cherished memories.

God invites us to slow down, notice the blessings woven into each day, and be grateful for the people and moments He places along our path. May we never become so busy that we miss the simple joys that make life so meaningful.

The June 2026 Consumer Price Index (CPI) report was a welcome surprise, coming in cooler than economists expected and providing some evidence that inflation pressures eased during the month.

The June Consumer Price Index (CPI) indicated that inflation cooled more than expected. Headline CPI declined 0.4% for the month, the largest monthly decline since April 2020, while the annual inflation rate slowed to 3.5%, down from 4.2% in May. Much of the improvement was driven by lower gasoline and energy prices during the month.

Core CPI, which excludes the more volatile food and energy categories and is often viewed as a better measure of underlying inflation trends, was unchanged during the month and slowed to 2.6% year-over-year. While the report was encouraging, one month’s data does not establish a trend. Second Quarter 2026 Market Summary

The second quarter of 2026 continued steady for the U.S. equities despite ongoing concerns surrounding interest rates, inflation, and geopolitical tensions. Markets experienced periods of volatility but ultimately finished the quarter with strong gains, led once again by technology and AI-related companies.

U.S. stocks rebounded sharply from their first-quarter decline, with the S&P 500 gaining nearly 15% in the second quarter, its strongest quarterly performance since 2020. Technology stocks led the rally, helping the Nasdaq-100 surge more than 27% during the quarter.

International stocks also posted solid gains in the second quarter, with emerging markets outperforming developed markets. The MSCI Emerging Markets Index rose more than 20%, compared with nearly 10% for the MSCI EAFE Index, led by a strong rally in South Korean equities.

Commodities struggled during the second quarter, with the S&P GSCI Commodity Index falling nearly 17%. Isn’t America Great!

Not a question...a statement.

We live in an extraordinary country.

My pastor shared a story over the weekend from the New York Post that really struck me. It isn’t about politics or economics, it’s about perspective.

A Japanese tourist visiting the United States for the World Cup wrote about his first experience at a Mexican restaurant. Before he had even placed an order, a basket of chips and salsa appeared on the table.

Confused, he stopped the waiter and said, “We have not earned these.”

The waiter simply smiled and replied, “They just come with the table, man.”

The tourist later reflected:

“They come with the TABLE. In my land, hospitality is a debt. Every gift creates an obligation... Here, the gift arrives before you have even proven you can pay for dinner.”

His friend warned him not to fill up on the chips, but it was too late. Honor demanded he finish every basket. By the time his meal arrived, he admitted he had been “defeated by a courtesy.”

One line especially stood out to me:

“Generosity that arrives before the request cannot be repaid. It can only be survived.”

That thought extends well beyond chips and salsa. It reminds me of the many blessings we receive every day, many of which arrive before we ever ask for them. For those of us with a faith perspective, it also echoes the grace we’ve been freely given.

The story prompted thousands of Americans to look at familiar things through refreshed eyes. Something as simple as complimentary chips became a reminder that hospitality, generosity, and kindness are woven into much of everyday life in our country.

This same group of Japanese fans also became known for bringing their own trash bags and helping clean the stadium after matches, a simple act of respect that earned admiration around the world. Their appreciation for our hospitality, paired with their own example of service, offers a lesson for all of us.

It’s easy to become consumed by headlines, social media, and the daily frustrations that surround us. Yet sometimes it takes the eyes of a visitor to remind us how much we have to be thankful for.

America certainly isn’t perfect. No nation is. But we are blessed with freedoms, opportunities, generosity, and everyday acts of kindness that many people around the world still find remarkable.

Sometimes the greatest reminder of how fortunate we are, comes from someone seeing our country for the very first time.

May we never lose our sense of gratitude, for the blessings we’ve been given and for the privilege of calling America home.

For most clients, the answer is a spouse, children, or other heirs. When viewed through that lens, it is worth considering whether those future beneficiaries could benefit from the same long-term growth-oriented investment strategy that helped build the portfolio in the first place.

While age is certainly a factor in financial planning, it is not the only consideration. Income needs, risk tolerance, estate planning objectives, overall assets, and time horizons all play important roles in determining an appropriate investment strategy.

Markets will always face challenges and uncertainty. Headlines change, geopolitical events come up unexpectedly, and volatility is a normal part of investing. SpaceX:

Market expectations suggest that a future SpaceX public offering could become the largest IPO in history. Some analysts estimate the company could raise more than $75 billion at a valuation

exceeding $1.5 trillion, far surpassing the current IPO fundraising record of $25.6 billion set by Saudi Aramco in 2019.

For U.S. companies, the largest IPO on record remains Visa’s 2008 offering, which raised $17.9 billion. A SpaceX IPO of the size being discussed would establish a new benchmark for both global and American public offerings.

Summertime Blues:

While summer is often associated with vacations, market participants frequently refer to the period as the “Summertime Blues” due to historically muted stock market performance.

Following a strong recovery from the first-quarter pullback, the S&P 500 gained 8.75% year-to-date through June 8. Historical data suggests that summer months have generally produced lower median returns compared with many other periods of the year.

Market Breadth - UP:

Despite a sharp pullback in technology stocks at the end of last week, underlying market breadth has continued to improve. Much of technology’s recent strength had been concentrated in semiconductor stocks rather than broadly across the sector. The divergence between semiconductors and software companies was largely driven by enthusiasm surrounding artificial intelligence, as advances in AI continue to fuel expectations for increasing demand for semiconductors and memory chips. The recent weakness highlights both the concentration of market leadership within technology and the influence of AI-related themes on sector performance.

What Is Your Style?

Recently I was told that my coaching “style” was different. This comment led me to reflect on how I show up on the field coaching my son’s baseball team and off the field managing my business.

As a coach, my style is simple:

I communicate. I communicate with parents about their child’s progress, strengths, and areas for improvement. I communicate with players about effort, attitude, and accountability.

I am present. I show up when the lights are on, but in particular when they are not. I am engaged. When I am there, I am all in. I push all my players, particularly my son. My players know what I expect: Play hard. Never quit.

They have been told they can control three things: Their energy, effort and attitude. If they don’t provide those things either collectively or individually, they will know! May be a bit much for some kids (and parents) but I am a guy who prefers a full-frontal assault verses a covert incursion.

My goal is always the same: to help young athletes (and young men) reach their potential. They are going to be future leaders. In their community, church, team and at home.

That same philosophy carries over into my business.

I believe clients deserve an advisor who is engaged, present, and available. Not just when markets are rising, but especially when uncertainty and challenges arise.

I strive to be fully invested in serving my Lord, my family, and my clients.

My style is not passive. It is not hands-off. It is not waiting for someone else to solve the problem.

When something doesn’t seem right, I ask questions. When challenges arise, I work through them. I pray, evaluate, and seek solutions. And when action is required, I act.

Whether on the ballfield, at home, or in the office, my approach remains the same: be engaged, communicate honestly, work hard, and give an all-in effort.

What is the Sharpe Ratio?

The Sharpe Ratio is a statistical measure used to evaluate an investment’s historical return relative to its volatility. It helps assess how efficiently risk has been compensated over a given time period.

In simple terms:

The Sharpe Ratio answers this question:

“How much additional return did an investor receive for each unit of risk taken?”

A higher Sharpe Ratio generally indicates better risk-adjusted performance.

Important Considerations:

The Sharpe Ratio assumes volatility is an appropriate measure of risk.

It works best when returns are relatively normally distributed.

Comparing Sharpe Ratios is generally most useful among similar investment strategies or asset classes.

A higher return alone does not necessarily imply better performance if significantly more risk was taken to achieve it.

Modern Portfolio Theory and Stock Market Efficiency

I have always asked myself a few questions:

Is a computer-generated asset allocation model able to evaluate a client’s risk tolerance, when the volatility spikes? Or do they need to have an investment process that can move them to cash? What good is a pie chart when the volatility spikes beyond a +2 or even +3 standard deviation?

What exactly is an efficient market?

Most financial planning software is built around principles associated with Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT) because the framework provides a structured and widely accepted approach to balancing risk and return within diversified investment portfolios. Developed by Harry Markowitz, MPT focuses on the idea that investors can potentially improve portfolio outcomes by combining assets with different risk and return characteristics rather than evaluating investments individually.

I have been a critic of Efficient Markets and Modern Portfolio Theory for almost three decades now. The investment management processes at Strong Tower have been built upon Relative Strength and Momentum strategies. Yes, they underperform at times, when sector rotation occurs and adjustments are made to the portfolios. However, we attempt to keep the strongest and best performing sector and individual investments in our clients account at all times.

Common Criticisms of MPT-Based Planning:

Critics argue that MPT and related planning software can have limitations, including:

Reliance on historical data and assumptions.

Difficulty modeling extreme market events.

Assumptions regarding investor behavior and rationality.

Sensitivity to projected return assumptions.

Limited ability to predict future market conditions.

Because of these limitations, financial plans should generally be viewed as dynamic planning tools rather than precise forecasts.

Market Seasonality

Stock market seasonality refers to the historical tendency for markets to perform differently during certain times of the year, month, or even week. It is based on recurring investor behavior, economic cycles, tax patterns, earnings schedules, and institutional money flows.

One of the best-known seasonal patterns is:

“Sell in May and Go Away”

This old Wall Street saying reflects the historical tendency for stocks to perform better from November through April than from May through October.

Historically:

November–April has often produced the majority of annual market gains.

May–October has tended to be weaker and more volatile.

That does not mean markets always fall in summer. Only that average returns have historically been lower.

Monthly Seasonality:

Certain months have stronger historical tendencies:

January: Often strong due to new investment flows and the “January Effect”. (Which we have discussed in previous Newsletters).

February - September: Generally, more mixed.

September: Historically the weakest month.

October: Volatile but often suggest market bottoms.

November - December: Frequently strong. (The Santa Claus Rally that we have also previously discussed).

Important Limitation:

Seasonality is a tendency, not a prediction tool. It provides insight and reoccurring market “biases”.

For example:

Some “weak” seasonal periods have produced major rallies.

Some “strong” seasonal periods have seen bear markets.

Macro events, interest rates, earnings, inflation, and geopolitical events, usually matter more than seasonality alone.

Momentum Investing

Momentum or trend-following strategies aim to capture returns by favoring assets with persistent relative strength while reducing exposure to weaker performers. Over time, this disciplined approach can produce favorable long-term results; however, it does experience periods of volatility and interim underperformance.

These fluctuations typically occur as market leadership rotates across sectors or asset classes. During such transitions, short-term performance can diverge from expectations and may feel inconsistent with investor intuition, which can challenge adherence to the strategy.

Maintaining discipline and following a systematic process is essential, as momentum strategies rely on long-term consistency rather than short-term outcomes.

Momentum investing generally differs from traditional valuation-based approaches that emphasize “buy low, sell high.” Instead, it focuses on securities that have already demonstrated relative strength, with the objective of maintaining exposure to assets that continue to perform well over time.

Who Doesn’t Love Christmas?? (Yes, I know it’s May)

Did you ever watch Little House on the Prairie?

One of the earliest episodes shows the Ingalls family celebrating Christmas in their new cabin on the prairie. The weather was brutal, and yet Mr. Edwards (one of my favorite characters) arrived bearing simple gifts: a few sweet potatoes.

After those potatoes, Caroline thought a bit better of Mr. Edwards and bit less about his offensive spitting of tobacco. The girls each received a single penny and a tin cup. You would have thought they had been given a king’s ransom. It was simple.

When my grandfather was alive, Christmas was something else entirely. The whole family together. A massive tree with presents, piled so high, you could barely see my head poking up from the middle of all the boxes and bows.

I have a picture of that somewhere. That felt special!

But it raises a question:

Was it the presents… or the presentation?

The wrapping paper.

The bows.

The experience of opening it all.

And that brings me to something else.

How does the financial services industry present itself?

You fill out a questionnaire.

It determines your “risk tolerance.”

That leads to a model allocation.

A pie chart.

A mix of mutual funds or indexes.

You’re told it’s diversified.

Designed to manage volatility.

Built to deliver the “optimal” return for your level of risk. (Optimal return? Maybe a topic for another time.)

Structured to meet your retirement goals.

Now step back for a moment.

What does the package actually contain?

If, at the end of that process, what you own is simply a collection of mutual funds placed into a model portfolio, managed somewhere else by someone else, with little or no direct oversight from the advisor sitting across the table from you, then that begs a question:

What are you paying for?

Where is the value?

Could you replicate something similar at a discount brokerage firm?

Maybe.

Or… you can dig deeper.

Ask better questions.

Request transparency.

Understand what you own, why you own what you own and what is it truly costing you?

If you’re not sure what to ask, start simple:

What exactly is in this portfolio?

What are the internal and external costs?

Who is actively managing this, and how often?

Just like you’d seek a second opinion from a doctor, it makes sense to do the same with your retirement plan.

“Life Happens….What Now?”

As we enter earnings season, much of our professional focus turns to portfolio positioning and what we should own within our models at Strong Tower. Markets continue to react to ongoing global tensions: conflict with Iran, questions of ceasefires, and the uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. In many ways, it’s business as usual. There is always something to be concerned about, and as we know, markets rarely welcome uncertainty.

But today, I want to step away from the markets and talk about something more important: life and perspective.

Life is challenging.

It’s not always picture-perfect. It’s not picket fences and roses.

Life is hard. It is not Romper Room.

Aging parents or in-laws.

Children: activities, school, sports, braces and more braces. (see below).

Marriage: balancing schedules, responsibilities, finances, and making time for one another.

Family, friends, church… the list goes on.

You understand.

My oldest daughter was diagnosed with scoliosis at age 12. Since then, she has worn a brace 18+ hours a day. Even sleeping in it. She’s now approaching 17. I can tell you this: she is one of the strongest young women I know. Yes, I said women. It hasn’t been easy: physically or emotionally, but she continues to persevere with grace. She is also wearing braces on her teeth and will likely still have them for prom and all the pictures that follow. But through it all, God is good!! Last fall, she committed to swim at the University of South Carolina. Division I! An incredible accomplishment. I couldn’t be prouder of her strength, discipline, and spirit. The scholarship is a blessing, but seeing my little girl do what she loves is the real reward. She’ll be heading off to college next year. A new season… one I’m not quite ready to talk about just yet.

My son has a deep love for baseball. His energy and effort on the field have never been in question. He’s the first to greet a new pitcher on the mound, always encouraging, always inclusive. I only wish the world always returned that same kindness. It’s not easy watching him navigate those challenges, but it’s part of his journey. Maybe I push him too much? Maybe I want him to be a bit tougher than the surrounding world that has ideas of how to “beat him down” and try to wrestle, from him, the eternal life and glory that awaits him?

I remind him often, he’s growing into the man God intends him to be.

Strength, resilience, character and faith, are forged in these moments.

And then there’s my youngest. My “baby girl.” She loves to sing, dance, and play guitar. The songbird of our home. Eleven going on twenty. Maybe it’s because she is our last, or maybe it’s because I was the youngest in my own family. Regardless, those quiet mornings when she climbs into my lap are moments I hold tightly. I was always told it goes fast… and now I understand just how true that is. Three children who bless me every single day. A kind of grace I know I don’t deserve.

And my marriage. My wife. My life. Truly the strongest person I know. She is currently walking through the difficult transition of moving both of her parents into assisted living. Not far away, but no longer just across the road like they have been these past six years. I lost my own parents 12 and 9 years ago, so while I understand the weight of it, I also know that loss never fully fades. The road ahead is uncertain, but we walk it together.

Every family carries something. Each of us has our own “cross to bear.” I certainly have a small forest to keep moving. Some heavier than others, but none meant to be carried alone.

We need community.

We need each other.

To encourage. To support. To simply show up.

Sometimes it’s not about money or material help. Sometimes it’s a hug, a kind word, or a prayer that can move mountains in the Courts of Heaven. God is always working, in ways we may never fully see.

In the quiet moments, if we allow HIM to search our hearts, we can be stirred to act. To reach out. To listen. To serve. HIS “Call to Action”. Not driven by urgency, but by purpose.

This newsletter often focuses on markets and money. Not today.

Hold on to perspective.

Do what matters….while you still can.

Reach out to a parent, a sibling, a friend… even someone where the relationship may be strained. There may come a day when that opportunity is gone.

The markets will do what they do. Returns will come, some better than others. But they will come.

The question is: What truly matters today?

Because we are not promised tomorrow.
