Recently, I was reading a book from Jordan Peterson, 12 Rules for Life, Beyond Order. For those that are not familiar with Dr. Peterson, he is a bestselling Canadian author, clinical psychologist, former university professor, and public speaker. Known for his work in psychology, personal development, and cultural issues.
He refers to Order and Chaos as it relates to the Chinese philosophy of the Ying and Yang. Opposite forces that are interconnected, balanced and constantly changing. You may have seen the picture of a black and white swirl (indicating constant movement and change. Others describe it as two dragons!) with a dot of the opposite color in each half, symbolizing that each force contains a piece of the other. In philosophy, the idea suggests that harmony comes from balance, not from eliminating one side or the other.

So, I thought about how this “idea or theory” relates to the markets?
Order:
Represents structure, predictability, rules, and stability.
Systems dominated by order tend to be organized, repeatable, and easier to control.
Examples: laws, schedules, disciplined processes, long-term strategic planning.
Strength: reliability and efficiency.
Risk: rigidity, inability to adapt when conditions change.
Chaos:
Represents uncertainty, randomness, disruption, and change.
Chaotic systems are harder to predict but often drive innovation and transformation.
Examples: market volatility, technological breakthroughs, competitive disruption.
Strength: creativity, adaptation, discovery of potentially new opportunities.
Risk: instability, lack of direction, large, unexpected losses.
Order in Investing:
Order represents the rules, processes, and repeatable disciplines investors (or advisors) use to manage portfolios:
Asset allocation frameworks.
Risk management rules (position sizing, diversification, exit and defensive strategies).
Rebalancing.
Long-term investment plans tied to objectives.
Order helps investors:
Maintain consistency.
Manage/Control risk exposure.
Avoid emotional decision-making.
Stay aligned with long-term goals.
However, relying only on rigid rules can become problematic if market conditions shift significantly and strategies are not adjusted or do not have the flexibility to be adjusted.
Chaos in Investing:
Chaos reflects the unpredictable nature of markets:
Economic surprises.
Geopolitical events.
Sudden volatility spikes.
Market bubbles and corrections.
Rapid sector leadership changes.
Effective investment management typically combines BOTH:
Order: A disciplined framework for portfolio construction, allocation, and risk control.
Adaptability to chaos: Willingness to adjust exposures, reduce risk, or shift toward emerging opportunities when market conditions change.
In simple terms:
Discipline determines the plan; flexibility responding to the market, and most importantly, effective execution helps provide the desired outcomes.
