Swimming Against the Current!
Ever try to swim against the current?
You swim and swim, only to look up and realize you’re almost in the same place you started. Investing can feel the same way.
Since May 2025, the Bullish Percent has largely traded between 40% and 62%, averaging approximately 51%. Think of it as the stock market spending much of its time around “midfield”, neither strongly offensive nor defensive.
For several years, I have utilized Nasdaq Dorsey Wright (NDW) technical analysis. It is a rules-based approach using Point & Figure charting, relative strength, momentum, and market participation to help identify market trends while reducing emotion and prediction from investment decisions.
One of its primary indicators is the Bullish Percent, which measures the percentage of stocks currently on Point & Figure buy signals.
Simply put, it answers:
How many stocks are actually participating in the market?
Dorsey Wright
A rising Bullish Percent indicates improving participation, suggesting that the “offense” is on the field.
A falling Bullish Percent indicates deteriorating participation, meaning that the “defense” is on the field.
Generally, readings above 70% indicate elevated risk, while readings below 30% indicate oversold conditions and potentially improving opportunity. However, the direction of the indicator is just as important as the number itself.
For much of the past year, we’ve been swimming through a strong, back-and-forth current around midfield.
Eventually, that range will break.
We don’t have to predict which direction it will go. Our job is to recognize when the current changes and adjust accordingly.
Sometimes the smartest way to reach your destination isn’t to fight the current.
It’s knowing when to swim with it.

Markets: Stocks have experienced increased volatility, particularly in technology and AI-related shares. The major indexes remain positive for 2026, but momentum has weakened.
Interest Rates: The 10-year Treasury yield has moved around/above 5%, creating additional pressure on equity valuations, especially higher-priced growth stocks.
Oil & Inflation: Oil prices have surged above $100 per barrel amid Middle East tensions. Higher energy costs are renewing concerns about inflation and potentially keeping interest rates higher.
Federal Reserve: The Fed is the major near-term focus. Investors are watching for indications of how higher oil prices and inflation will affect monetary policy.
Geopolitics: The Middle East remains the greatest immediate geopolitical risk, particularly because of its impact on global energy supplies. The Russia-Ukraine war also remains elevated, with continued drone/missile attacks and increased Western air-defense support for Ukraine.
Bottom Line:
The primary market concern is:
Geopolitical Risk + Higher Oil + Inflation + Higher Interest Rates + Pressure on Stocks
For now, markets remain positive, but the combination of 5% Treasury yields, $100+ oil and weakening market participation suggests maintaining a disciplined approach to risk rather than becoming overly aggressive.
